Purposeful Penny focuses on collecting spare change and other funds to help further education for underprivileged children. It is a NGO, which is registered as a student organization with the University of Pittsburgh. A small group of students at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs launched an informal group and started collecting coins since January 2009. As of January 2010, Purposeful Penny has around 25 members including executive board members, general members and associate members.
Purposeful Penny’s support of BKU began in 2010.
